Dr Bell received his PhD in Cardiovascular Pharmacology from QUB, investigating regulation of myocardial contractility by cardioendocrine peptides. Following postdoctoral training at the University of Dusseldorf, Tokyo Medical and Dental University and Harvard University, he was appointed to a Lectureship, then Senior Lectureship in Therapeutics and Pharmacology at QUB. He has > 25 years’ experience in academia, leading curriculum development and delivery of pharmacology and therapeutics teaching to >350 medical, dental and science undergraduates annually. His translational research is focused on the pharmacology of cardiac peptides (CGRP, IMD/AM2, endothelin, NPY, somatostatin), antidiabetic agents (PPAR agonists), nitric oxide deficiency, hypertension, ischaemia-reperfusion injury, myocardial hypertrophy and failure. He has published >50 papers and invited reviews. He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology, Member of the International Society for Heart Research and Committee Member of the Scottish Cardiovascular Forum. He is local lead for the BPS prize competition, and passionate about enthusing the next generation of scientists and clinicians about pharmacology.
